Published as the cat column in Pet Business Magazine’s April issue, this piece is about the role of supplements in pet stores and the idea that although selling supplements requires retailers to become well educated on a complicated topic, those with a strong knowledge base can see great returns.

Consumables are an important part of any retailer’s bottom line—not only because they mean multiple purchases, but also because they create customer loyalty. When customers find a brand they like and know they can get it at a particular store, it is likely that they’ll return. But it’s not often that a new product category emerges that can be considered a consumable. The food, cat litter, and treat categories are all long established and well known. Still, in recent years savvy retailers may have noticed a newcomer: pet supplements.

According to Maureen O’Neill, executive director at Wapiti Labs, there are about three million cats that currently take vitamins and supplements. With 38.9 million cat-owning households, many of which own three or more cats, there is also plenty of room for growth. Click here to read the full article.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Nina, as the copywriter for her online product descriptions (for the new Tasty Clouds online store). For a few samples of my work, check out the Tasty Clouds Weekly Special description or the company’s Super Variety Pack.

And while you’re there, consider ordering something sweet for yourself—Nina was kind enough to send me a few samples and her cotton candy is every bit as mouth watering and delicious as it looks!

*I’m working with Nina on a few more products too, which I’ll post once they’re finished. Can’t wait to show you the latest from this great company.

For three years I worked as the point person between an army of PR people and a business-to-business magazine. As the associate editor I was the one who reviewed incoming press releases and who played go-between, reaching out when we wanted to do company profiles or Q&As.

During that time I saw a lot of mistakes—business owners who had let their PR person run wild and who, eventually, paid the cost. Here are the top 5 things you should NEVER let your PR person do. Click here for the full article.
